About Cardiothoracic Surgeons

Cardiothoracic surgeons and thoracic surgeons have the same meaning. They are surgeons that specialize in performing surgery on the heart, lungs, and/or esophagus. Some types of health issues they treat include: lung cancer, esophageal cancer, severe emphysema, artery disease or blockage, or gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Cardiothoracic surgeon jobs employ those that are certified to perform a large number of surgeries including:

  • Lobectomy or Pneumonectomy – removing sections of the lungs that contain cancer
  • Thoracoscopy – Insertion of a camera to visually assess the state of the lungs and the area around the lungs
  • Esophagogastrectomy – Removal of sections of the esophagus due to cancer and reconstruction of the gastrointestinal tract
  • Lung Transplant – Replacing a lung that is ineffective
  • General Heart Surgeries – Clearing or replacing blocked or non-functioning arteries

After graduating medical school, cardiothoracic surgeons then go on to complete a five year general surgery residency. After their surgery residency, they can then decide what field of surgery they want to specialize in. In this case, cardiothoracic surgery. They must then complete an additional two to three years of a cardiothoracic surgery residency. Afterwards, some doctors decide to specialize in a specific field of cardiothoracic surgery like congenital heart surgery.

All cardiothoracic surgeon jobs require certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. In order to achieve this certification, they must pass a written and oral test. The written test encompasses all areas of thoracic surgery. The oral test is meant to test knowledge, judgement, and ease of integration of the skills they have learned into clinical practice. Only surgeons that can pass these two tests become cardiothoracic surgeons. All cardiothoracic surgeons must also have strong ethical standing in the profession before they are given certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
