Physician anesthesiologists are medical doctors with a M.D. or D.O degree that have decided to specialize in anesthesiology. Anesthesiologists have completed four years of medical school, a one year internship, a three year residency in anesthesia, and some even pursue more training in the form of a fellowship.
Anesthesiologists are in charge of all aspects of a patient’s anesthesia perioperative care and all medical decisions concerning the anesthesia process. Perioperative care is administered or determined before the procedure and provides better conditions for the patient during and after surgery. The anesthesiologist is there to make sure the patient is as safe as possible before, during, and after his or her procedure.
There are three forms of anesthesia that can be administered for a procedure:
All of these forms of anesthetics are typically planned, carried out, and observed by a trained and experienced physician anesthesiologist.
Anesthesiologists also determine the medications needed after surgery to manage pain from the procedure. This may include intravenous pain medication, topical pain relief, or pain medication taken orally. The anesthesiologist will also monitor the patient after surgery to determine whether they are recovering appropriately from the anesthesiology plan used during the operation. Any incidents of concern will be quickly recognized and corrected by any certified physician anesthesiologist.
Anesthesiologist physician careers fall under three main categories: General Anesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia or Pain Management. General anesthesia pertains to general forms of anesthesia for any patient that is not high risk. Pediatric anesthesia is child specific anesthesiology. Because children’s systems are much more sensitive than adult systems, it takes a specialized anesthesiologist to see to their care. Anesthesiologists who specialize in pain management know what medications are necessary to treat certain forms of acute or chronic pain.
Most anesthesiologists are certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology or the American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology.
