Cardiology physicians, or cardiologists, are medical doctors that specialize in the treatment of the heart, the arteries, and the veins. However, cardiologists are not surgeons; they are internal medicine doctors that specialize in the heart and circulatory system.
After graduating from medical school, all future cardiologists must complete a three year internal medicine residency program. The structure of this residency program is very precise for the needs of a cardiologist. After passing the board certified internal medicine tests, an internal medicine physician can then begin the specialized training it takes to become a cardiologist. All cardiologists must take part in a cardiology residency that includes the following training experiences: clinical training (24 months), cardiac catheterization laboratory (4 months), non-evasive cardiac evaluations (6 months), electrophysiology (2 months), and non-laboratory practice activities (8 months).
After completion of all necessary residency sections, a cardiologist must then take the American Board of Internal Medicine cardiology examination before being eligible to apply for cardiology jobs.
