About Dentists

Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry / Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) are the same degrees. They use the same degree requirements, but universities determine which degree is awarded. Dentistry is the scientific art of caring for the general oral health of patients. This includes health of the teeth, gums, mouth, and any related areas. Some common procedures a dentist might perform include filling a tooth, tooth extraction, and cleaning and polishing teeth. A dentist also promotes good oral health by educating patients about how to care for their teeth. A dentist will instruct patients to brush regularly (two to three times a day) and floss. Dentists can work in private practices or in a hospital.

There are many specialties within the dental field that many dentists will pursue. These include:

• Endodontics – Endodontics involves any procedure performed on the pulp or internal tissues of the tooth. This includes root canals.
• Orthodontics – Orthodontics is the treatment of misaligned teeth or jaw. Orthodontists place braces on the teeth to straighten teeth. They also deal with any jaw or bone issues that may be present.
• Periodontics – Periodontics is dentistry performed on the gums and other tissues around the tooth. This includes treatment of gum ailments like gum disease.
• Prosthodontics – Prosthodontics is the term for cosmetic dentistry. This includes fitting implants where teeth are missing and any other processes that have to do with the appearance of the mouth.
• Pediatric Dentistry – A dentist that specializes in dentistry for children. They may work in a team with other dentists that special in other areas.
• Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – Oral surgery treats the soft tissues of the mouth if they are disrupted by disease, injuries, or defects. Maxillofacial surgery is performed on the bones of the head, neck, face, and jaw to help patients with similar issues.

All dentists must complete a dental program and be board certified by the American Board of General Dentistry.
