About GI Physicians
Gastroenterology jobs hire doctors that specialize in the digestive system, or GI tract. Gastroenterologists diagnose and treat illnesses and disorders in the digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts. Gastroenterologists work with patients in offices and hospitals and perform diagnostic procedures such as endoscopy and colonoscopy.
After completing medical school, gastroenterologists must complete a year-long internship, followed by a three year residency in internal medicine, followed by a three year fellowship in gastroenterology. Gastroenterologists are board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine or the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
