When a patient must spend time in a hospital, they are normally treated by a hospitalist. Hospitalists are medical doctors that have decided to specialize in general hospital care for patients. This profession is a new one, but has shown significant growth since 1994. Before hospitalists, it was common for primary care doctors to travel from their doctor’s office to visit any patients they happened to have in the hospital. Hospitalists normally visit patients twice a day, and as stated earlier, can be readily reached. In addition to caring for hospitalized patients, hospitalists are also in charge of performing research, teaching other professionals, and providing leadership in any area of hospital medicine.
Most hospitalists go on to achieve higher training in hospital medicine after they have finished an internal medicine, pediatric, or family medicine residency.
