After graduating from medical school, plastic surgeons must complete a five to six year residency which is split between general surgery and plastic surgery training. Plastic surgeons wishing to further sub-specialize must participate in a fellowship. Plastic surgeons are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
