About Pulmonologists

Pulmonology jobs employ physicians whose specialty is the lungs and respiratory system. It is a branch of internal medicine and is closely related to critical care medicine. Many pulmonologists are also certified as critical care specialists. Pulmonologists can work in hospitals for critical care or acute patient care, or they can work in clinics, dealing with patients who have chronic breathing problems like asthma, COPD, and emphysema.

Pulmonology jobs can also include physicians who are sleep medicine specialists. While most physicians require an additional 12 month fellowship in order to become a sleep specialist, pulmonologists are only required to have a 6 month fellowship. Consequently, the majority of sleep doctors are also pulmonologists.

After completing medical school, in order to become a pulmonogist, a candidate must complete a residency in internal medicine, followed by a fellowship in pulmonology that must last at least two years. Afterwards, they may take the exam to become certified as a pulmonary specialist. Pulmonologists are certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
