Sports Medicine doctors specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of injuries during sports and exercise. Sports Medicine doctors can be primary care physicians or orthopedic surgeons specializing in sports medicine. Primary care physicians specializing in sports medicine do not perform surgery but rely on other treatments such as physical therapy and medication.
After graduating from medical school, primary care sports medicine physicians are required to complete a three year residency in family or internal medicine. Those who are orthopedic surgeons must complete a five to six year surgical residency. Either residency program will be followed by a two year fellowship in sports medicine or surgical sports medicine. Sports Medicine physicians can be board certified either by the American Board of Internal Medicine or the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
