Urologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and management of the urinary tract. Urologists must manage urinary tract disorders and illnesses by using medicine and surgery. Since the urinary tract is closely related to the reproductive organs, Urologists must be knowledgeable about both the urinary tract and the male and female reproductive systems. Within urology, there are several sub-specialties such as endourology, which deals with the closed manipulation of the urinary tract; laparoscopy, which is a form of laser surgery; urologic oncology; reconstructive urology; neurourology; pediatric urology; and more.
Urologists must complete a five year residency, post-medical school, and can further follow that up with a fellowship in one of the sub-specialties of urology. Urologists are board certified by the American Board of Urology.
